UNBOUND – Installations by seven artists from Rio de Janeiro

UNBOUND, Installations by seven artists from Rio de Janeiro was the first exhibition mounted under the auspices of Parasol unit foundation for contemporary art in 2004 and curated by Ziba Ardalan. Seven artists were invited to create a site-specific installation or to adapt one of their existing works to the raw, un-renovated space of the foundation’s galleries. Their installation occupied an area of approximately 1,200 square metres.

Since this group show at Parasol unit, the artists have continued to show internationally: Brígida Baltar has presented in several gallery museum exhibitions, including São Paulo, Brazil; and in the Embassy of Brazil, London, UK. Felipe Barbosa has shown in gallery and museum exhibitions, including in Madrid, Spain, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Eduardo Coimbra at the 29th Bienal de São Paulo, 2010; and solo shows in São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Tatiana Grinberg has had numerous solo shows in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; was a PIPA 2012 nominee; and has shown in several group exhibitions between Brazil and Europe. Jarbas Lopes has shown in solo shows in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; New York, USA; Santiago, Chile; and in a number of museums, galleries and festivals in Latin America, as well as in several group shows in New York galleries. Anna Maria Maiolino presented a solo exhibition at Berkeley, CA, USA; São Paulo, Brazil; and in 2010 at the Camden Arts Centre, London and in 2019 at the Whitechapel Gallery, London, UK. She had a major retrospective in Barcelona and Santiago de Compostela, Spain, and Malmo Sweden, and was included in dOCUMENTA 13. João Modé has shown in several exhibitions in Brazil and abroad, including Berlin, Germany; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and in the 28th Bienal de São Paulo, Brazil in 2008.
