Yang Fudong: No Snow on the Broken Bridge

One of China’s leading contemporary artists, Yang Fudong will have his first solo exhibition in the UK at Parasol unit foundation for contemporary art in London from 7 April – 9 June 2006.

A major new work – No Snow on the Broken Bridge, an 8-screen film installation – has been specially commissioned by Parasol unit for the exhibition and will be premiered on the first floor of the Gallery. Four additional video works will be shown in the ground floor spaces: The Revival of the Snake (2005), exhibited for the first time as a large-scale installation on 10 screens; Jiaer’s Livestock (2002-2005); Lock Again (2004); and Flutter Flutter… Jasmine, Jasmine (2002).

Yang Fudong works with film, video installation and photography. Born in Beijing, China (1971) he graduated from the China Fine Arts Academy, Hangzhou before moving to Shanghai in 1998. Yang Fudong has had solo shows at the Castello di Rivoli, Italy (2005); the Kunsthalle Wien, Austria (2005); the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2005); FACT Liverpool (Liverpool Biennial) (2004); and at The Moore Space, Miami (2003). His work has been included as part of international group exhibitions at the First Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art (2005); the 5^th Shanghai Biennale (2004); Tate Modern, London (2004); the Carnegie International, Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh (2004); the 50^th Venice Biennale (2003); the Musée d’art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (2003); the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia (MNCARS), Madrid; the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo; and the Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin (2001). Yang Fudong’s work is held in important public and private collections worldwide. He lives and works in Shanghai.

Parasol unit foundation for contemporary art is housed in a former warehouse building on Wharf Road in London N1. Designed by leading architect Claudio Silvestrin, renovation of the site was completed to museum standard in February 2006. The building has 500 sq ft of exhibition space and includes an artist-in-residence studio and reading area. Founded in 2005, Parasol unit is directed by Ziba Ardalan. The Foundation, a not-for profit operation, is privately funded.
